Hobart was founded in 1804 as a penal colony of the British Empire and became Tasmania’s capital. It’s located in the south east of the island along the banks of the Derwent River with a population over 220,000 people.

Due to its location, the city is a major seaport and world-renowned for Antarctic scientific research. It’s also the financial and administrative centre of the state with notable industries being tourism, wine, sport, arts and entertainment.

Hobart is accessible from the mainland by the Hobart International Airport, which is serviced by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin and Tiger. Hobart is famous for Mount Wellington which looms over the city, river and ocean.
